Later in life, she completed additional coursework at the University of Lowell. For many years, she worked with her husband at Murphy & Callahan Pharmacy to put her children through college and help her husband run the business. She retired in 2001.
A communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, she attended mass daily and was an active member and officer of the parish's Women's Guild. She was also a member of the League of Catholic Women and of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. Throughout her illness, she participated in exercise and Tai Chi classes at the Lowell Senior Center.
