EAST LONGMEADOW -- George J. Moriarty, 89, of Bluebird Estates, went to meet his Lord on Saturday, December 8, 2012.
Mr. Moriarty, the son of the late Eugene F. and Teresa (Walsh) Moriarty was born and raised in Springfield. He spent all of his unmarried years in the Forest Park section of Springfield. He attended the local schools, graduating from the High School of Commerce.
After World War II, he held various positions with local companies before joining the former Diamond Match Company. He was there for 35 years, retiring from the post of Plant Controller. He received his degree in accounting from Western New England College in 1956.
After marrying the former Barbara Coburn, they moved to East Longmeadow in 1954. Almost immediately, Mr. Moriarty became involved with Town Affairs. His great love was the East Longmeadow Fire Department, of which he was a member for over 30 years, retiring as Captain. He never lost his interest in that department. Along the way, he spent 13 years as a member of the Town Appropriations Committee. After retiring from Diamond Match, he spent 15 years as a bus driver for the School Department, a career he greatly enjoyed. He was a member of St. Michael's Parish, serving as an usher at the 8 o'clock Mass for over 25 years. For over 20 years, he assisted the Town Clerk with all local, state and national elections. Mr. Moriarty was an active member of the East Longmeadow Lions Club, serving for over 50 years, including two terms as Club President. He also found time to donate over 12 gallons of blood to the blood programs.
He leaves two sons, Richard and his wife, Therese and Donald and his wife, Joy, all of East Longmeadow; and his daughter, Joanne Amaral with Dennis Eldridge of Billerica, MA; nine grandchildren, April and her husband, Seth, Daniel, Christopher, Steven, Krista, James, Timothy, Jonathan and Jeffrey; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Moriarty in 1996, his three brothers, Charles, John and Edward, his three sisters, Emma Payne, Grace Van Valkenburg, and Alice Farrell.
He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
MORIARTY -- George's funeral will be held on Wednesday at 8:45 AM from the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main St., East Long-meadow followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Michael's Church, Maple Street, East Longmeadow. Rites of Committal will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery, Calendar Ave. East Longmeadow. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
