Retired Captain, Lowell Fire Department; 92

LOWELL -- George T. Robitaille, 92, of Lowell, died Tuesday, March 4th, at Lowell General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Sally M. (Witts) Robitaille who died July 7, 2009.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, February 19, 1922, the son of the late Samuel T. and the late Marie (LaFleur) Robitaille, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School.

A veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, George proudly served his country as a Corpsman with the U.S. Navy. He actually landed on Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. history, on his 23rd birthday. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

Before retiring as Captain, George was with the Lowell Fire Department for over 30 years.

Among his many enjoyments, George was an avid golfer and was a former member of the Mt. Pleasant Golf Club in Lowell. He was also a dedicated New England Patriots fan. Following his retirement, he and his wife Sally enjoyed some extensive traveling.

George is survived by a daughter, Marianne Estes and her husband, Blynn of Hudson, NH; two sons, James P. Robitaille of Hudson, NH, and Paul G. Robitaille and his wife, Carol of Londonderry, NH; five grandchildren, Karen Gallagher of Litchfield, NH, Jamie and Amy Robitaille, both of Hudson, NH, and Marc and Andrew Robitaille, both of Londonderry, NH; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Cynthia Witts of Chelmsford, MA, and Christine Witts of Methuen, MA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also grandfather of the late David Gariepy, father-in-law of the late Barbara Robitaille, and brother of the late Cecile Arcand, the late Herve Robitaille, and the late Normand Robitaille.

The Robitaille family would like to thank George's neighbors, Eileen & Bill Paquin and their son, Billy (and Lucky their dog) for their many years of friendship.
