Obituary Condolences

Gerard E. Proulx
of Lowell, WWII Vet, 86

LOWELL -- Gerard E. Proulx, 86, of Lowell, formerly of Dunstable, died Saturday, January 19th, at Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford.

He was the beloved husband of Rita (Gilbert) Proulx with whom he would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on April 7th of this year.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, September 5, 1926, the son of the late Elphage and the late Imelda (Bilodeau) Proulx, he attended St. Joseph's Grammar School in Lowell and was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School in the Class of 1944.

Jerry began his life of service to others at the age of 8 as an altar boy. When he was drafted during WWII, he still served Mass; but he was also in charge of over 800 altar boys.

Jerry humbly served our nation as a member of the last troop of Army Horse Calvary. After that basic training, he was recruited into the Army Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which later became known as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). At age 18, Jerry was the youngest undercover agent in Europe at the end of World War II.

After returning home from the war, he walked daily from Lowell to Lawrence to attend the Bradshaw and McIntosh Accounting Schools while working nights at a vinegar mill and then a textile mill to care for his family. Upon graduating from both schools, he became an accountant at St. John's Hospital, now known as Lowell General Hospital -- Saints Campus. He retired as the Internal Auditor after 34 years of faithful service.

He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in North Chelmsford. He was a member of St. John's Men's Guild and the AARP.

Besides his wife, Rita of Lowell, Jerry is survived by his son, Paul G. Proulx and his wife, Virginia of Toms River, NJ; two sisters, Gertrude Lampron of Dracut, MA, and Helen Breault and her husband, Raymond of Lowell, MA; and several nieces and nephews.

Humble servant of God, country, employers, family and friends, Jerry Proulx "did it his way".
