Gilbert Burns
Loving husband and father;
U.S. Army Korean War Veteran

CHELMSFORD, MA -- Mr. Gilbert Burns, of Chelmsford, MA, formerly of New York, died in Haverhill on Friday, February 24, 2012, after a lengthy illness, with his loving family by his side.

He was the beloved husband of Jane H. (Hill) Burns, with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage last July 19th.

Born in The Bronx, New York, March 1, 1931, a son of the late Alfred and Julia (Inglis) Burns. He received his early education in The Bronx school system.

Mr. Burns enlisted in the U. S. Army on February 14, 1952, serving with the 4054th Army Support Unit, as a Private First Class. He received the National Defense Service Medal, and was Honorably Discharged on February 12, 1954.

After his return from military service, Gilbert earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from New York University in 1959. He furthered his education, first earning a Master of Science degree at NYU, and then a Master of Public Administration from Baruch College, New York.

Gilbert began his engineering career at the New York City Transit Authority. A few years later, he became affiliated with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, where he worked until his retirement in 1996. Gilbert and Jane then moved to Chelmsford to be closer to their family.

Mr. Burns was an active participant in Northeastern University's, RE-SEED Program (Retirees Enhancing Science Education through Experiments and Demonstrations), volunteering in many Lowell classrooms, helping teachers educate their students about the Physical Sciences.

Gilbert was a member of the Ta Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. He loved to spend time with his family, and especially enjoyed traveling with his wife to our treasured National Parks and to Europe. He also enjoyed watching and feeding wild birds.

He was a kind and gentle man who will always be remembered for his love of family, and his dedication to conserving, protecting, and caring for our natural resources.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son, Bruce G. Burns and his wife, Deborah of Westford, MA; and a daughter, Amy J. Burns Vandenburgh and her husband, Mark of Albany, NY.

To the Burns Family,

In my years in the DEC, Gil was one of the most competent engineers and the best supervisor one could hope to encountered. Above all, Gil was a great person to be around, both professionally and socially.

My condolences to you all.

Words are inadequate to convey how I feel upon hearing of Gil's passing. For over 40 years I knew Gil, first in White Plains then in the New York City offices of DEC he was consistent in his warmth as a person, willingness to help others and concern for the environment and getting the job done. But most of all as just a great individual to be around under any circumstances. He will be missed, truly missed.

My heart goes out to Jane and her family. I worked with Gil (and subsequently kept in touch with them through my brother Frank) during his days with NYSDEC. I sent out a notification to the Regional Office staff, and heard back from several who expressed their condolences and relayed great stories of how Gil had helped them both in their careers and personally. We will miss him, and are glad that we got to know such a fine gentleman. - Randy Austin
