DRACUT, MA Janina C. "Jay" (Plachna) Boumil, 96, wife of the late John J. Boumil, passed away November 19, 2012 with her family by her side.
Jay was born in Lowell on April 1, 1916, and was the daughter of the late Stanley and Anna (Cebula) Plachna.
Jay graduated from Lowell High School in 1934 and was a post graduate student at Dracut High School in 1935. She and her husband owned and operated Boumil Farm in Dracut. Outside of the farm, Jay worked 14 years at the Internal Revenue Service in Andover. In 1978, Jay retired and moved to Centerville, MA on the Cape until 1996 when she returned to Dracut.
Jay was a gifted and talented individual who enjoyed quilting, needle work, and gardening. She received several local and state awards for her handiwork. Jay quilted over 90 quilts in her lifetime. While living at the Cape, Jay was an active member of the Osterville Garden Club. She received many awards for her flower arrangement displays. Along with the Osterville Garden Club, Jay was an exhibitor in the Boston Flower Show.
An avid sports fan, Jay enjoyed watching the Red Sox, New England Patriots and the Boston Celtics as well as the Olympics. Nothing made her happier then the local teams winning the World Series and the Super Bowl. In her later years, Jay took up golf and enjoyed playing at the Ivanhough Golf Course. She was also a member of the Dracut Grange, No. 216.
She is survived by her sons, John J. Boumil and his wife, Patricia (Campbell) of Dracut, Robert S. Boumil and his wife, Geraldine (Barton) of Alburg, VT, daughters, Susan M. Ray of Tyngsboro, and Meredith and her husband, Robert W. Flynn of Dracut; a brother-in-law, Henry Casey of Dracut, eight grandchildren;
11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and two dear godchildren, Philip J. Sorota of Louisville, KY, and Kristine Casey Dunbar of Hubbardston, MA.
Jay's family wishes to thank the staff of the Heritage Nursing Center for thier kindness, care and compassion extended to Jay while at Heritage.
BOUMIL -- Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, November 25th at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME 2159 Lakeview Ave., DRACUT. Her funeral will take place from the funeral home at 7:45 a.m. on Monday morning with her Funeral Mass to follow at 9 a.m. at St. Francis Church in Dracut, and burial will follow in Richardson Cemetery also in Dracut. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jay's memory to the Dracut Food Pantry 1934 Lakeview Ave., Dracut, MA 01826.
