John L. Quintin; 88
Long-time Groton Resident

GROTON -- John Leonard Quintin, 88, of Groton, died on Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Westford, after a long illness.

John was born on February 7, 1924 in Corkshire County, Canada, the son of Georgiana (Vallee) and Leonard Quintin. His family moved to the United States when he was five years old. He was raised and educated in North Chelmsford, MA, and became a U.S. citizen.

During World War II, he served in the U.S Army in the European Theater. He received an Honorable Discharge after having served in France and Germany, and attained the rank of Sergeant.

"Red" Quintin worked for many years as a welder at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford.

John was the loving father of four sons. He and his family lived in Tyngsboro before moving to Groton in 1968. He was a member of the local square dancing club, the Groton Merry Mixers. He loved helping others, travelling, camping and spending time with his family. He was an avid stamp collector, and a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Pepperell.

John had considerable skills in carpentry, mechanics, electricity and plumbing. He could repair almost anything, and he enjoyed working on old houses, barns and vehicles. He was a kind, gentle man of remarkable patience and tolerance. He loved children and pets and, like many of his generation, "The Greatest Generation", he often did a thing simply because it was the right thing to do. He was quiet and dependable.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Phyllis (Russell), and a sister, Shirley Wainwright.

He is survived by his sister, Jeannette Caissie, of North Chelmsford, and four sons, Jon (Townsend), David (Townsend), Peter and his wife, Nan (Pepperell), and Paul (Groton). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mariann and her husband, Eric Magerman, (Bellingham), Melissa Quintin (Groton), Crystal and her husband Ryan Carroll (York, PA), Shelby Quintin and Westley Quintin (Hanover, PA), David Quintin (Orrtanna, PA), and Amy Quintin (Sidney, Au); as well as five great-grandchildren, Shawn Quintin (Groton), John Coburn (Tyngsboro), Jessica and Zachary Magerman (Bellingham), and Elise (York, PA).

He is also survived by three foster children, Mary Leach, Helena Charlestrom, and Joshua Leach; a brother-in-law, Earl Russell and his wife, Peggy (Groton); as well as many nieces and nephews.

QUINTIN -- Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 5-8 pm at Badger Funeral Home, 45 School Street, Groton, MA. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 28 Tarbell Street, in Pepperell. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pepperell.
