AYER -- Julia M. (Owens) McKinney 77, of Ayer died Monday, January 28, 2013, at University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester.
Julia Marie (Owens) McKinney was born in Paris, Illinois, July 6, 1935, the daughter of Moke and Marie (Collins) Owens and has resided in Ayer for over 45 years.
Julia was a graduate of Paris (IL) High School, where she played sports, receiving the G.A.A. award for Sportsmanship her senior year. Mrs. McKinney was also a talented and accomplished vocalist and sang in her school choir. Julia was recognized as an All-State soloist while in high school and pursued her singing vocation throughout Europe and several chorales locally. She continued her education at Illinois State Normal University.
For over 30 years, Mrs. McKinney has worked at the Fitchburg office of the Social Security Administration, retiring in 1995. During her employment there, Mrs. McKinney received several achievement awards, including the Gallivan Award, recognizing her 30 years of distinguished public service. Prior to her working for the Social Security Administration, Mrs. McKinney worked for the National Security Agency in Washington, DC.
She was an active member of New Hope Community Church in Ayer and was a member of their choir. During her retirement years, Julia became a community activist in the town of Ayer, where she served as a member and past president of the Ayer Council On Aging.
She leaves her husband of forty five years, Charles D. McKinney; a son, William Grady and his wife, Marilyn of Shirley; a daughter, Carol Herbert of Virginia; and loving brother-in-law, Stanley McKinney, two stepsons, Brian McKinney of Los Angeles, CA, Charles McKinney of Philadelphia; eleven grandchildren, Latonya, RC, Aleah and Nyvette Grady, Shanelle and Natasha Herbert, Zaharah, Nuryya, Suad, Nadia and Jordyn McKinney and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her two brothers; Moke Owens of Paris Illinois and Frank Owens of Seattle Washington. Last year she was predeceased by her stepdaughter, Tanya Lynn McKinney of Atlantic City, NJ.
MCKINNEY -- Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, February 2nd at New Hope Community Church, 139 Sandy Pond Road, Ayer. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
