LOWELL -- Katherine E. "Kay" McCarthy, 82, a lifelong Lowell resident, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Wingate of Belvidere Nursing Home, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
She was the daughter of the late Martin F. and the late Katehrine E. McCarthy; and is survived by her sisters, Alice F. McCarthy of Lowell, and Ellen F. McCarthy of Bridgeport, CT; her three nieces, Betty Anderson, Anne Marie Hinck, and Kathy Gardner; and her four nephews, James Wall, John Wall, Thomas Wall, and Michael Wall.
She was predeceased in death by her sister, Ann McCarthy Wall and her brothers, Martin F. McCarthy, SJ and John J. McCarthy, SJ.
Katherine was a graduate of Lowell High School, class of 1947, Lowell Teachers College, class of 1951, and the Boston University Graduate School.
She taught in Chelmsford, Lowell, and Andover Public Schools as an elementary and physical education teacher. A well traveled and an avid fitness enthusiast, having attended many workshops on fitness and pain erasure with Bonnie Pruden, she was also involved in sports as a participant, coach and spectator.
She was a cancer survivor who donated much of her time at Saints Memorial in the Oncology Department and with the annual cancer drives.
