great-grandmother, sister

TYNGSBORO -- Martha M. (Howard) Nichols, formerly of the Centralville section of Lowell, most recently of Tyngsboro where she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the age of 87.

She was the beloved wife of the late Raymond H. Nichols.

Born in Lowell on August 21, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Jefferson and Beatrice (Hamilton) Howard.

During World War II, Martha worked at Textron of Lowell which made gas masks and parachutes for the war effort. She also worked at Hub Hosiery.

St. Michael's Parish was an important part of Martha's life, she worked as the housekeeper at the Parish Rectory for 21 years until her retirement, was an active parishioner and was a member of the Legion of Mary, Holy Rosary Sodality and St. Dominic's Club.

Surviving her are two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas P. and Kathleen M. (Golden) Nichols of Tyngsboro, and Retired Master Sergeant U.S.A.F. John P. and Denise L. (Bonney) Nichols of Anderson, SC; a brother, Robert E. Howard and his wife Ann of Dracut; a sister, Phyllis Norton of Lewiston, ME; a sister-in-law, Claudia Perrault of Lowell; seven grandchildren, Stephen T., Gregory T., Kimberly K., Jamie N., Courtney M., Nathan G. and Emma E. Nichols; four great-grandchildren, Skyla M. and Evan T. Nichols and Alexandra N. and Abby L. Hoover; also several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Roger R. Nichols and sister of the late Francis T. Howard, Beatrice T. Howard, Roger W. Howard, and Paul H. Howard.

NICHOLS -- Relatives and friends are invited to Martha's Life Celebration at the McKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street, on Monday from 10 AM until 11 AM. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM in St. Michael Church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha's name may be made to St. Michael School, 21 Sixth St., Lowell, MA 01850. For directions or condolences please visit
