Lifelong resident of Ayer; 92

AYER -- Mary C. (Cogan) Gardner, 92, of of Ayer, died peacefully Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton, after a brief illness.

She was the loving wife of the late Robert W. Gardner, Sr., who passed away on October 15, 2007. Bob and Mary were happily married for 60 years.

Mary was born January 1, 1922, the daughter of the late Patrick and Delia (Gallagher) Cogan, who were both born in Ireland. She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph F. Cogan and Robert J. Cogan.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Ayer. She attended Ayer High School graduating in 1938, and continued her education at the Chandler Business School in Boston.

Mary was a longtime Secretary to the Principal at the Hilltop School in Ayer. She previously worked as a telephone operator and worked for the Federal Government at Fort Devens during World War II.

She was a devout Catholic and a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Ayer.

Mary affectionately devoted her life to her grateful family, and will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to have known her.

Mary is survived by her son, The Honorable Robert W. Gardner, Jr., and her daughter, Patricia Mary Gardner, both of Ayer. Mary is lovingly survived by her 10 grandchildren, Sharon P. Hebert and her husband, Eric, and Maureen E. Breault and her husband, David, all of Ayer, Erin C. Murphy and her husband, Peter of Westford, Colleen A. Ryan and her husband, Stephen of Hudson, NH, Kevin M. Barry and his wife, Veronica of Milford, MA, Emily K. Lindblad and her husband, Andrew of Watertown, M. Eileen Gardner and Elizabeth A. Gardner, both of Brookline, MA, Thomas H. Gardner and Margaret E. Gardner, both of Boston. In addition, Mary is survived by

14 great-grandchildren.

GARDNER -- A Mass of Christian Burial is to be celebrated on Thursday, July 31, at St. Anthony's Church, 14 Phoenix Street, Shirley. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ayer.
