Sister Mary Ryan S.N.D. formerly of Lowell; 88 -- WORCESTER -- Sister Mary Ryan, 88, of the Sisters of Notre Dame, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester. Sister Mary was born in Lowell, the daughter of William I. and Frances (Parker) Ryan. She graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame in Tyngsboro and Emmanuel College in Boston. She earned a master's degree in education at Fairfield University in Conn. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1943, and was known for many years as Sister Wilhelmina. -- Sister Mary was an educator in Notre Dame schools for 45 years. She retired in 1991 after 20 years as an assistant principal at Cardinal Cushing High School in South Boston. Previously, she had taught business courses at CCHS and St. Mary High School in Lynn. For the first 16 years of her teaching mission, she taught in elementary schools, including St. Augustine School in Lawrence, St. John School in Peabody, St. Gregory School in Dorchester and Our Lady of the Angels School in Worcester. She leaves three sisters, Sister Frances Pauline Ryan S.N.D. of Worcester, Ellen Woods and Sue Ryan, both of Northborough, a brother, Bart F. Ryan and his wife Joan of Lowell, 49 nieces and nephews.--- all of whom had a very special bond with her called by them (Mary, the Nun). Sister, Mary loved and cherished her entire family and kept in touch with all by a weekly telephone call and attendance at all family gatherings. She also leaves her Sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame. She was predeceased by two sisters, Sister Frances Wilhelmina Ryan S.N.D., and Frances Durkin and her husband Harold, and two nephews Paul Ryan and Patrick Frye. -- RYAN -- Calling hours are Tuesday, July 2, beginning at 1:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 2:30 p.m. in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester. The funeral Mass will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame, 351 Broadway, Everett, MA 02149.
