Mary T.(Coughlin) McDermott, RN
of Tyngsboro, MA

TYNGSBORO, MA -- Mary T. (Coughlin) McDermott, 92, of Tyngsboro, MA formerly of Pelham Manor, NY, and later Virginia Beach, VA died Sunday Dec. 2, 2012 at the Life Care Center Nashoba Valley in Littleton, MA.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Edward J. McDermott who died in 2000.

Born in Bayonne, NJ, Mary was the third of seven children of Matthew and Mary Coughlin. She grew up in Bayonne, NJ and graduated from Holy Family Academy with the Class of 1939. She received a degree in Nursing from St. Vincent Hospital in New York City and earned a Bachelor Degree in Public Health Nursing from St. John's University when it was located in Brooklyn,NY.

During World War II, she served in the US Army Air Corp. as a Flight Nurse, and received the Air Medal for coming under enemy fire while evacuating wounded troops from the frontline positions in The Philippines.

Mary remained devoted to her family throughout her life. She was known for always being ready with a song on the piano, for organizing family "orchestras" and for her enjoyment of Irish music.

She is survived by a daughter and son in-law, Mary and Joseph Conway of Tyngsboro, MA and their son Joseph and daughter, Katherine; two sons and daughters in-law, Edward and Laura McDermott of Ramsey, NJ and their sons, Andrew and Ryan; and Drs. Joseph and Catherine McDermott of Virginia Beach, VA and their daughters, Kelly, Bridget and Christine; and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Dec 15, 2012 at 8:30AM at the Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 West Stevens Ave., Hawthorne, NY with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 at the Holy Name of Jesus Church, 2 Broadway, Valhalla, NY.
