Maunsell B. Babin
Former Pepperell Police Chief, Navy Vet; 86
PEPPERELL -- Maunsell B. Babin, 86, formerly of Pepperell, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Laconia Health Care Center, Laconia, NH.
Mr. Babin was born in Boston, October 26, 1927, a son of Eustace M. and Margaret L. (Blake) Babin and was a longtime resident of Shirley Street, Pepperell. Following his retirement, he resided several years in Palm City, Florida, The Villages, Florida and Aiken, South Carolina before finally moving to Laconia, New Hampshire.
He was a 1945 graduate of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. He continued his education as an accounting major at Oxford School of Business in Cambridge and later studied at Northeastern University where his study focus was in law enforcement.
During WW II and the Korean Conflict, he served his country for four years in the Intelligence Department of the United States Navy.
In 1956, Mr. Babin embarked on a career in law enforcement that spanned over three decades. His first position was a police officer in the Town of Wayland. In 1960, he moved to Pepperell where for 10 years he worked as a police officer when, in 1970, was appointed Chief of the Department, a position he held for 10 years.
Following his retirement from the Town of Pepperell, he held several positions including Assistant Manager of the Fort Devens Golf Course, a players assistant at Wang Country Club in Groton, and also at Pipers Landing Golf Course in Stuart, Florida.
Mr. Babin was a life member of the Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association, a member and past president of the North Middlesex Chiefs of Police Association. Mr. Babin was a member of the St. Paul Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Ayer and Ashby and a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Lowell. He also served 20 years as a deputy tax collector in the Town of Pepperell.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Noel O. (O'Neill) Babin; two sons, David J. Babin of Pepperell and Alton Bay, NH, Kenneth M. Babin of New Ipswich, NH; two daughters, Dorie A. Babin of Hubbardston, Karen J. Blake of Ramer, TN; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Kristine Elizabeth Babin, in 1965.
BABIN -- Funeral services will be held 10 AM Friday, July 11, 2014 at Community Church, 2 Townsend Street, Pepperell. Burial will be Pepperell Association Cemetery.
