Lowell, MA native, national level tennis player
VERO BEACH, Florida -- Michael I. Nelson, 65, formerly of Lowell and Key West, Florida, but most recently residing in Vero Beach, Florida, died Tuesday, July 16th at his home.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, June 2, 1948, the son of the late Walter L. Nelson, Sr. and the late Bernice (Mills) Nelson, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1966 where he was also an outstanding athlete. He went on to attend Memphis State University in Memphis, Tennessee and was a member of their tennis team.
Mr. Nelson continued to play tennis his entire life as a former member of the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston. He competed at the national level in father and daughter tournaments, and was a ranked senior player in Florida.
He was a longtime business owner in Key West and moved to Vero Beach 10 years ago.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his daughter, Angelique Nelson-Soderman and her husband, Daniel of Vero Beach, FL; a brother, Walter L. Nelson, Jr. and his wife, Jean of Lowell, MA; a sister, Susan Kalil and her husband, John of Lowell, MA; two grandchildren, Alexa Soderman and Sommer Soderman; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Gail Ann Nelson, and the late Brent J. Nelson.
