Mildred E. Whitney Obituary
Mildred E. Whitney
Longtime North Chelmsford resident

NORTH CHELMSFORD -- Mildred E. (Wilcox) (McDonald) Whitney, a Nashua native and longtime Chelmsford resident, passed away from pneumonia on Friday, January 25 at Lowell General Hospital.

Millie was born August 19, 1927 in Nashua, NH, daughter of the late Raymond and Irene Wilcox. She was a member of the Nashua High School Class of 1945. She attended Keene State College, where she met and married Thomas L. McDonald, in 1947. They moved to North Chelmsford in 1961 where they raised their family of three boys - Stephen, Michael, and William. Mr. McDonald passed away in 1973.

In 1981, Millie married Charles R. Whitney of North Chelmsford, and they enjoyed 10 years together until Mr. Whitney's passing in 1991. In later years, Millie enjoyed a longtime friendship with Gerald Preston of Chelmsford, who passed away in 2000. Millie worked at the Lowell 5 Savings Bank until her retirement in 1987.

A lifelong Christian, Millie grew up in the First Baptist Church of Nashua. During her years in Chelmsford, she was a member and deaconess of the Congregational Church in North Chelmsford. She was later a member of Life Through Christ Christian Fellowship, and in more recent years a member of the Central Congregational Church in Chelmsford. For many years, Millie was active with the Salvation Army in Nashua, working joyfully to provide for children at Christmas. She was a member of TOPS in North Chelmsford and was very proud of the "KOPS" status she maintained for over 20 years. She was also active with the Senior Center in North Chelmsford. Mildred was a caring and gentle woman with a wonderful sense of humor who was loved by many people. She will be remembered by her family for her strong sense of character and moral compass, which guided her through life's trials and through raising three teenage boys as a widow.

Millie is survived by her eldest son Stephen McDonald and his wife Joann, of Lansdale, PA. She is also survived by her youngest son William Thomas McDonald and his wife Flor Thomas of Dracut, with whom she lived in the final years of her life. Millie's daughter-in-law Flor was her loving primary caregiver in recent years. She was predeceased by a son, Michael D. McDonald, in 2009. Grandchildren are Thomas M. McDonald of Washington, DC; Michael S. McDonald of Lansdale, PA; Amy McDonald Yeaton and her husband Thomas Yeaton, of Portsmouth, NH; and Jerome Thomas of Dracut, MA. A grandson, David McDonald, passed away in 2002. Millie was predeceased by her siblings Donald J. Wilcox and Ruth (Wilcox) Jolly. She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Winslow of Dalton, MA, and her first cousins James and Robert Gifford of North Chelmsford; and by many loving nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
