of Lowell; 93

LOWELL -- Peter A. Vergados, 93, of Lowell, died Wednesday evening, November 7th at Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean (Courtessi) Vergados who died January 23, 1985.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, October 5, 1919, a son of the late Arthur and the late Panagiota (Ziavaras) Vergados, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Vergados proudly served his country as a Corporal in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific Arena.

Peter will always be remembered as a hardworking man. As a young boy, he began his life-long career as a small businessman, selling newspapers in Kearney Square. Over the years, he owned and operated a number of small businesses in the Greater Lowell community. In the years leading up to his retirement, Peter was the proprietor of the Highland Variety corner store, a fixture in Lowell's Highlands neighborhood. He always had great appreciation for his loyal customers.

After his retirement, Peter enjoyed daily walks on the boulevard in the company of his special group of "walking friends." He was an active sponsor of the Highland Park Baseball Leagues, sponsoring his favorite team, the Yankees.

Peter was a longtime member of the Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Lowell.

Mr. Vergados is survived by a daughter Patricia A. Bustamante and her husband Joe of Jersey City, NJ; two sons Arthur Vergados and Stephen Vergados and his wife Mary (Durkin) all of Lowell; nine grandchildren Julie Simoneau and her husband Kevin, Jennifer Vergados and her fiancé Ariane Theriault, Abaigeal Vergados, Kristen Hammond and her husband Jason, Deidre Vergados, Jana Vergados, James Vergados, Jillian Vergados and Jianna Bustamante; two great-grandchildren Joshua Simoneau and Michael Hammond; two daughters-in-law Alice (Harrington) Vergados and Carol (Cuipa) Vergados; a sister-in-law Mary Orcutt, and many nieces and nephews.

He was also father of the late James Vergados and brother of the late George Vergados, Jennie Vergados, Antonia Vergados and Martina Guircan.

VERGADOS -- In Chelmsford, Nov. 7, 2012, at Palm Manor, Peter A. Vergados, 93, of Lowell, husband of the late Jean (Courtessi) Vergados. Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 10 to 10:30 A.M on Saturday. His Funeral Service will follow at the Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Lowell at 11 o'clock. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery.
