ROCK SPRING, Georgia -- Raymond Mercier, 70, of Rock Spring, GA, formerly of Groton, MA, passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2013.
Born May 22, 1943 in Lowell, MA, Raymond was the eldest child of the late Alphonse Pierre Mercier and Rita Irene Boutin Mercier.
He served in the U.S. Air Force before continuing on to college. He graduated with a B.S. in Finance and Accounting from Lowell Technological Institute, and then earned his M.B.A. from New York University.
He retired from Hewlett-Packard (formerly Digital Equipment Corporation).
Ray loved sports and lettered in high school football. He played baseball, softball, and boxed while in the Air Force. He enjoyed recreational hockey as a youth and continued to play well into his 40s, becoming the longest member of the time of the Groton, MA "over 40" hockey league before health issues prevented him from playing. He was an avid supporter of all Boston sports teams - the Celtics, Patriots, Bruins, and Red Sox and was thrilled to watch the recent 2013 World Series Red Sox victory.
Ray loved and was proud of his family and would share stories whenever he could.
In the last seven years since becoming ill, Ray was fortunate to be cared for by many wonderful doctors, in particular, Dr. Wilson, in addition to compassionate, devoted staff from LaFayette Healthcare, Memorial Hospital, Hutcheson Medical Center, Prime Care Nursing Services, and Life Choice Hospice.
He is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of 47 years, Jane Avery Mercier, who in the last several years of his life, dedicated herself to his care and comfort. He is also survived by his sister, Irene Favreau of Hampton, NH; brother, Paul (Annette) Mercier of Townsend, MA; daughter, Stephanie (Michael) Howard of Hixson, TN; daughter, Christine (Matthew) Bromberg of West Hartford, CT; son, Raymond (Kerri) Mercier of Pepperell, MA; grandsons, Connor Howard, Samuel Bromberg, Sawyer Mercier, Quinn Mercier, and Tristan Howard; granddaughters, Morgan Howard, Kayleigh Howard, and Madison Bromberg; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
