GLEN, NH -- Richard F. "Dick" McElhinney, Sr., age 73, husband of Suzanne (Brassard) McElhinney of Glen, NH, and a former resident of Dracut, passed away peacefully at home, with family by his side on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, after a 7-month battle with brain cancer. He was the son of the late Michael F. and Esther M. McElhinney of Billerica, MA.
He spent his early years in Woburn, MA later moving to Billerica where he graduated from Billerica Memorial High School in 1958 as a star athlete. In 2005 he was inducted into the B.M.H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also a graduate of Palo Verde College, Blythe, CA. A long-time employee of Colonial Gas Company he retired in 2000. He was also a former Director and Coach of the Dracut Pop Warner Organization.
He loved spending time with his family at their home in Glen, at Pine Point Beach, ME and he also loved the many road trips he and Sue took, especially the two cross-country. He spent many hours in his garage restoring antique tractors, was a car enthusiast driving his Corvette throughout New England and he was also an avid skier.
He was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Vietnam War and he was a member of the American Legion, Post 0200 of New Hampshire.
Surviving him in addition to his loving wife Sue of 47 years, he is survived by two sons and two daughters-in- law, Richard F., Jr. "Rick" and his wife Linda (Anderson) of Dracut and Michael P. and his wife Lisa (Asselin) of Hudson, NH; a daughter and son-in-law, Kellie A. McElhinney and her husband Frank Mancini of Lunenburg, MA, his grandchildren Stig Erik, Keirsten, Logan, Diana and Carolyn; two sisters, Carol Fletcher of Lowell and June Ellen Calo of Billerica; also his in-laws, Lucien and Patricia Brassard, Paul and Rachel Brassard, Diane and George Halper, Margot and Bob Davis along with several nieces and nephews and dear friends.
MCELHINNEY -- Mr. Richard F. "Dick" McElhinney, age 73, a resident of Glen, NH and husband of Suzanne (Brassard) McElhinney. A memorial visitation will be held at the ROLAND W. MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, 308 Pawtucket St., Lowell on Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. ATTENDANT PARKING. Funeral Friday morning with a mass to be celebrated at 11 o'clock in Ste. Marguerite D'Youville Parish, 1340 Lakeview Avenue, Dracut. Burial with be private. Those planning to attend the funeral mass are asked to go directly to church.
