of Ayer; 83

AYER -- Ruth E. (Stevens) Sparkes, 83, of Ayer, died Monday, January 20, 2014, at Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley, Littleton.

Her husband, Bradley W. Sparkes, died in August 1995.

Mrs. Sparkes was born in Salem, July 5, 1930, one of four children born to Harold and Beatrice V. (Russell) Stevens and was a 1947 graduate of Salem High School. Following her graduation from high school, Mrs. Sparkes worked at the C.F. Tompkins Furniture Company in Salem.

In 1953 she married her husband, then Sgt. Bradley W. Sparkes. As a result of his career in the United States Army, she and her family resided in Warrenton, Virginia, and the Philippines before finally moving to Fort Devens and settling in Ayer.

Mrs. Sparkes was an active member of the Federated Church in Ayer.

She leaves two sons and daughters in law, David C. and Terri Sparkes of Hudson, Stephen B. and Michelle Sparkes of Ashby; a daughter, Janet E. Grocer of Ashland; two grandchildren, Dylan Grocer and Jessica Grocer.

She was predeceased by two children, Suzanne H. Sparkes in 1992 and William A. Sparkes in 1993. She was the sister of the late Albert Stevens and Elizabeth Haley both of Salem and Russell Stevens of Danvers.

SPARKES -- Funeral services will be held 10 am Saturday, January 25th at Federated Church of Ayer, 21 Washington Street, Ayer. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Ayer
