Thomas P. 'Tom' Meehan
Lifelong resident of Lowell, WWll Vet; 89

LOWELL -- Thomas P. "Tom" Meehan, 89, a lifelong Lowell resident, died unexpectedly, Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Lowell General Hospital, Saints Campus. For the past 62 years, he was the beloved husband of Jean (Regan) Meehan, whom he first met while managing the First National Grocery Store in their younger years.

A son of the late Timothy and the late Mary Ellen (Hayden) Meehan, he was born February 1, 1924, in Lowell, attended Immaculate Conception Grammar School, and graduated from Lowell High School. He then attended Lowell Commercial College. He served with the United States Army during World War II.

Tom adored his wife, Jean, and loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He cherished time spent with them traveling, especially to Seabrook Beach, and taking day trips. He also enjoyed Irish Music, and was an avid sports fan, and storyteller.

Mr. Meehan made his home in the Belvidere Section of the City, and was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. He worked as a store manager at the First National Grocery Store before being transferred to their Ayer store in the early 1950's. Tom then went to work as a bookkeeper with his brother at the C-Rich Corporation and the Town House Motor Inn. He also worked as the manager of Plaza Liquors in Haverhill, and as the bookkeeper for Timmy Meehan's House of Beef in Haverhill and Newburyport. Until his retirement in 1990, he worked for Wang Laboratories in Lowell.

In retirement, he worked for the Mahoney Funeral Home, and Tom gave generously of his time to help the Poor Clare Sisters, taking them to appointments and helping with maintenance at the Monastery.

In addition to his beloved wife, Jean, he is survived by his children, Mary Jean Desmarais and her husband, Bob, of Middle Island, NY, Donna Marie Cote and her husband, Peter, of Lowell, Kathleen Robinson and her husband, Bruce, of Barrington, NH, Maureen Horne of Lowell, Shawn T. Meehan and Torrey Desper of Lyman, ME, Christine Camacho and her husband, Steve, of Dracut, and Christopher Meehan of Lowell; 11 grandchildren, Erin Burns and her husband, Jesse, of Dracut, Nicole Nguyen and her husband, Peter, of Dracut, Lindsey Reis and her husband, Rui, of Lowell, Peter Cote of Lowell, Tommy Cote of Lowell, Matthew Robinson of Portsmouth, NH, Kevin Robinson of Portsmouth, NH, Olan Merrill-Horne and his wife Katherine of Lowell, Olivia Horne of Lowell, Zac Camacho of Dracut, and Blake Camacho of Dracut; six great grandchildren, Nora Burns, Breaden Burns, Maddox Nguyen, Ava Reis, Luke Reis, and Seamus Merrill-Horne; his sisters-in-law, Eileen Adie and her husband, Arthur, of Lowell, and Lorraine Antonelli and her husband, Henry, of Hudson, NH; and his nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was also the loving father of the late Tommy Meehan Jr. who passed away in 1971 due to Cystic Fibrosis, and was the brother of the late Timothy Meehan and the late John Meehan.

HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT IMMACULATE CONCEPTION (LOWER) CHURCH, 144 EAST MERRIMACK ST., LOWELL, AT 12 NOON. BURIAL IN ST. PATRICK CEMETERY.
