AYER -- Lt. Col. William D. Allan, U.S. Army (ret), 75, of Ayer, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013 , at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Quincy, January 4, 1938, the son of William and Margaret (Gormel) Allan, and has resided in the Ayer area for 30 years. He grew up in Quincy and was a 1956 graduate of North Quincy High School. He continued his education at Northeastern University in Boston and enlisted in the ROTC there.
Col. Allan went on to serve his country for 20 years in the United States Army, retiring in August 1982.
An avid sailor, Col. Allan owned "Northern Express", a 42' Pearson sailboat he moored in Salem Harbor. He also held an airplane pilot's license, enjoyed reading, making model ships and airplanes. He enjoyed watching old movies, the NCIS television show, as well as spending time with his family.
He was a member of the Kingdom Hall -Jehovah Witness in Pepperell.
Col Allan leaves his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth J. "Betty" (Cummings) Allan; a daughter, Sharon E, Allan of Shirley; a son, Scott W. Allan of Worcester; two grandchildren, Brittany Allan and Brandy Allan, and one great-granddaughter, Justice Allan. He also leaves many friends and relatives.
ALLAN -- Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 15th at Chapel at Massachusetts Veteran's Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. A memorial service will be held 7 pm Friday, May 17th at Kingdom Hall-Jehovah Witness, South Road, Pepperell. Calling hours are 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, May 14th at the T.J.
