G. Raymond 'Ray' Haithwaite

TEWKSBURY -- G. Raymond "Ray" Haithwaite, of Tewksbury, formerly of Lowell, died March 2, 2014, at Blaire House Assisted Living in Tewksbury, aged 96 years. He was the husband of Muriel (Simmons) Haithwaite, who died July 4, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Adeline (Warnock) Haithwaite.
Born in Lowell on June 7, 1917, he was a son of the late George Q. R. Haithwaite and Esther (Sawyer) Haithwaite. He graduated from Chelmsford High School with the Class of 1935.
Ray became associated with the former Union National Bank of Lowell for several years before he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps, which later became the U. S. Air Force. He trained as a bombardier-navigator on B17's and B29's until the end of the war, and was honorably discharged on December 12, 1945.
After proudly serving his country, he returned to Union National Bank, where he held positions of increasing responsibility in several divisions, eventually moving into the role Assistant Vice President, until his retirement after 42 years of service. He then served as a Consultant for the Central Savings Bank for several years.
Ray was a Life Member of the Lions Club of Lowell. Twice during his 48 years as a Lion, he was elected President, and also held most other Club offices at various times between 1964 and 2012. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, which is the highest accolade a Lion Club member can attain.
He is survived by a son, Ray Haithwaite and his wife, Shirley of Fort Collins, CO; a granddaughter, Sharon Morrison and her husband, J. R. of New Milford, CT; a grandson, Raymond Haithwaite and his wife, Cristina of Fairfield, CT; two great-granddaughters, Emily Haithwaite and Maggie Morrison; and two great-grandsons, George Haithwaite and Jack Morrison.
