Stavroula 'Stella' Gavriel
of Lowell; 96

LOWELL -- Stavroula "Stella" Gavriel, of Lowell, 96, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014. She was a loving person who greatly enjoyed being with her family and friends.

Miss Gavriel was born June 13, 1917 in Lowell to the late John and Mary (Stoupas) Gavriel.

She attended the Hellenic American Academy and Lowell Public Schools before going to work at the U.S. Government's Remington Plant in Lowell during World War II making parachutes for the Army. She was later promoted to instructor of sewing, teaching others how to make trousers for the soldiers. Following her government service, Miss Gavriel worked as a seamstress-and a supervisor-at Lark Dress in Lowell before retiring early to care for her ailing mother. Often seen at her Singer sewing machine, Miss Gavriel continued to make and mend clothes well into her nineties.

Miss Gavriel enjoyed reading and visiting friends, but her favorite hobby was cooking. Whether it was an old family recipe, or something new she tried, Miss Gavriel could always pride herself on making delicious food. Her spanakopita was cherished at every holiday dinner.

Miss Gavriel was a lifelong and active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell.

She is survived by her niece, Maria (Gavriel) Maskaluk; a great niece, Tanya (Maskaluk) Houston, her husband, Jason Houston; a great nephew, Peter Maskaluk, and his wife, Joanna (Jette) Maskaluk; and a great great nephew, Cole Houston, all of Lowell; and many close friends and cousins.

Stella was pre-deceased by her brother, Peter Gavriel and his wife, Bessie (Liakos), her brother, Timothy Gavriel and his wife, Joyce (Roy), and a sister, Sophie Tsoulias and her husband, Nicholas.
