Julius Tharpe
formerly of Ayer; 79

LOWELL -- Julius Tharpe, 79, formerly of Ayer, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at unexpectedly at his home.

Mr. Tharpe was born in Macon, Georgia, June 14, 1934, a son of Jerry and Emma Lee (Saviour) Tharpe and resided many years in the Devenscrest section of Ayer. He had also resided in Georgetown, South Carolina and Montclair, New Jersey before returning to this area in 2010.

During the Korean Conflict, he served his country for two years in the United States Army. For over 22 years, he worked as a civil service employee at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford where held the position of operations equipment manager. He retired in 1993.

Following his retirement he operated a window cleaning service in the area. He was a former member of the Crispus Attucks Lodge of Masons # 24 in Leominster, enjoyed working in his garden and playing poker.

He leaves his wife, Barbara (Crocker) Tharpe; two sons, Frazier Tharpe of Montclair, NJ, Julius A. Tharpe of St. Cloud, FL; a brother, Robert Tharpe of Macon, GA; a sister, Martha Westbrook of Macon, GA; eight grandchildren, Frazier "Chip" Tharpe II, Abdullah Jenkins, Tabitha Woods, Jerrad Leffew, Tishawn Jenkins, Kaamil Jenkins, Jaarmil Tharpe and Naadir Tharpe. He also leaves several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Zenobia D. Tharpe who died in 1997 and a son, Ronald E. Tharpe of Worcester who died 2006. He was predeceased by siblings, Jerry, Mattie, George and Elizaberth.

THARPE -- Funeral services will be held 11 am Wednesday, April 16th at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, (Rte 2A) Ayer. Please see www.andersonfuneral.com for additional assistance. Mr. Tharpe's family will receive family and friends on from 10-11 AM Wednesday prior the service.
