GARDNER -- John P. Rice, 59, formerly of Ashby, died Thursday, April 24, 2014, at his home with his sweetheart by his side.

John was born September 15, 1954 in Holliston, MA to Arthur C. and Geraldine K. (Regan) Rice. He was a 1973 graduate of Holliston High School and received a degree in accounting from Bentley University in 1977.

He is survived by his wife, Martha L. (Wallace) Rice with whom he would have celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary on April 28, 2014. A brother, A. Patrick Rice of Ashland; two sisters, Elaine Afleje of Orange Park, FL, Sharon Thomson of Jacksonville, Florida. Many cousins, nieces and nephews.

John spent his career in the furniture industry. He and his wife presently own LaChance Furniture Showrooms in Gardner, MA. He was a General Manager for Stickley-Audi & Company headquartered in Manlius, NY, responsible for their flagship store in Fayetteville, NY. Prior to his joining Stickley-Audi, he was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nichols and Stone, one of America's oldest furniture brands. Early in his career, John was General Manager of the Bradford Furniture Store chain.

John served on the Town of Ashby Finance Committee as Chairman while residing in Ashby.

He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Marjorie S. Wallace. John had provided her with a loving and safe home in her final years. He is also survived by his "Grandchildren" from Sarasota, FL, Evan, Sarah and Katharine Wallace with whom he had many great adventures. His son, the puppy, Jock P. Rice who was devoted to him.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed travelling with his wife especially in Maine.

He was considered by all who knew him to be an outstanding gentleman. His honesty and integrity inspired many. He had the respect of the many employees and friends he made over his lifetime. He will be dearly missed by all.

RICE -- Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, (Rte 2A), Ayer. Please see for additional information. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Natick will be private. Calling hours are 4-7 p.m., Monday, April 28th at the funeral home.
