Obituary Condolences

John C. Anton
of Atkinson, NH; 93

July 23, 1920 - May 16, 2014

John C. Anton, 93, a prominent area businessman, passed away Friday, May 16, at the Lawrence General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was the beloved husband of Evelyn L. (Dawson) Anton for over fifty years.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, July 23, 1920, the son of the late Charles J. and the late Paula (Vacass) Antonopoulos, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1938.

A veteran of World War II, John was a drill instructor in the United States Marine Corps. His platoon was part of the 1st Marine Division where he fought at Guadalcanal, Peleliu and Okinawa. John, after the war continued working with his father and brothers for thirty years at Anton's Cleaners, which was founded by his father in 1913. In 1975 John took ownership of Anton's in Andover and continued the business as John Anton's Cleaners.

John was an avid community leader. He supported Merrimack College, belonging to both the Men of Merrimack and Friends of Merrimack. He served on the Board of Directors of Lawrence Savings Bank and The Lawrence Boys and Girls Club. He was a member of The Lawrence Rotary Club, where he was the recipient of The Paul Harris Fellow award; The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, The Ahepa Chapter 102, a longtime member of The Holy Family Men's Guild; in addition he enjoyed his membership at Andover Country Club and the Lanam Club, in Andover, MA. He was a member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Andover, MA.

John was always willing to help as a volunteer for the civic organizations he belonged to; be it as an "MC" for an auction or being Santa Claus handing out presents, at the Hennessy School. John befriended many in his lifetime, all of whom knew once John was their friend; they had a friend for life. Throughout the years, John would visit his friends who were ailing; he also comforted and transported friends, so they could visit their loved ones. It was part of John's makeup to perform random acts of kindness, without expectations of acknowledgement.
