Maurice F. Powers
1934 - 2014

EAST HAVEN, CT -- Maurice F. Powers, 80, of East Haven CT and a former Lowell resident, died Friday, May 23, 2014, at Yale New Haven Hospital, following a period of declining health while bravely battling many chronic illnesses.

He was the husband of the late Lorraine I. (Beland) Powers.

Maurice was born in Lowell on April 17, 1934, son of the late James and Madalyn (Curley) Powers. He grew up with his many siblings in Lowell and attended Lowell High School followed by additional education at Framingham State University and Northeastern University. Maurice was sworn into the U.S. Army and worked in the Signal Corps. He served in Korea followed by a period of reservist duties.

Maurice and Lorraine met and were married in Lowell in 1959. They later moved to Nashua, NH where they settled and raised their family for nearly 30 years. During this time Maurice worked as a Systems Analyst at Raytheon's Missile Division in Bedford, MA for many years and later Data General in Westboro, MA; the company he retired from in 1995.

Since 1997, Maurice enjoyed the tranquility of living at or near the ocean; this included the NH seacoast, the Texas gulf coast and most recently the CT shoreline. Maurice had a passion for Irish genealogical, historical research, and education. He was a member of The New England Historical Genealogical Society and The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA.) He also enjoyed reading and listening to classical music and was well versed in Irish and Civil War history. In his retirement, Maurice greatly enjoyed travel, especially to Ireland which he spoke about fondly up until the very time of his passing.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Powers of Hamden, CT; Kevin Powers and his wife, Melissa of Greenville, NY; his siblings, Madalyn "Sookey" McLaughlin of Tewksbury; Robert Powers and his wife, Virginia of Lowell; Judith Sholik and her husband, John of Salem, NH; David Powers and his wife, Carol of San Marcos, TX; several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Patricia Chaput and James Powers.
