Duane E. Paulsen
Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather
TYNGSBOROUGH -- Duane Everett Paulsen, a resident of Tyngsborough for more than forty years, passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2014, in Concord, aged 77 years. He had celebrated his 56th wedding anniversary on May 31st with his wife Marjorie (Cobb), and was looking forward to a visit from their only daughter Kendra Loveless and grandsons, Wade and Mark.
He was born on May 4, 1937 in Fargo N.D. to Everett N. and Gudrun B. Paulsen. Three sisters survive him, Cynthia Paulsen, Sandra Paulsen, and Marsha Paulsen Peters, as well as many loved nieces and nephews.
He attended elementary through high school in West Fargo, N.D., and North Dakota State University (then named North Dakota Agricultural College) where he received both his Bachelor of Science and Master's Degrees in Chemistry. His doctoral degree was earned at MIT in Physical Chemistry. One of his greatest joys was singing with the MIT Choral Society under the direction of Klaus Liepmann, and singing with the group on a European concert tour in 1962.
Mr. Paulsen was employed in research by Air Force Geophysics Laboratory at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA, for his entire career. He considered himself fortunate to be working with people he respected on projects of long term interest and use to science. One project he was particularly proud of was EXCEDE, which was completed not too long before his retirement in 2003.
In recent years, Duane enjoyed taking part in many productions of local theaters including Groton Theater, Theater III in West Acton, and Nashoba Theater in Westford. He was just as happy participating in the construction of sets as he was in taking on a challenging role and made himself available as needed. Other interests included all major league sports, and politics. He was a staunch Democrat. He attended Christ the King Lutheran Church in Nashua, NH, where he was a member of the church council and sang in the choir.
