LOWELL -- Edna Mary (Roane) (O'Keefe) Sousa, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died peacefully on July 3, 2014, at Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus, aged 90 years. She was the beloved wife of Raymond K. Sousa, with whom she would have celebrated 42 years of marriage on July 28th.

She was also the wife of the late Edmond L. O'Keefe.

Born in Lowell, October 19, 1923, she was the daughter of the late James P. H. and Edna M. (Keirstead) Roane. She received her early education in the Lowell school system and graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1941. She advanced her education at the Lowell State Teachers College.

After college, she became associated with the former A. G. Pollard and Company as a Receptionist. On November 1, 1944, she enlisted in the U. S. Navy where she served as Yeoman, Third Class, at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, until her honorable discharge in January of 1946. In 1988, after 20 years of dedicated service, she retired as a social worker from the Massachusetts Department of Welfare.

Mrs. Sousa was a member of the American Legion Post 87, and a former member of the VFW Walker-Rogers Post 662 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed classical and big band music, was an animal lover, especially dogs, and in her younger years, she loved tending her flower and vegetable gardens.

Edna Mary was a kind, generous person who will always be remembered for her love of family, especially her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth (Lisa) O'Keefe and her partner, Peter Magnin of Merrimack, NH, and Sharon (O'Keefe) Blazich and her husband, Kenneth of Salem, NH; three sons, Michael O'Keefe and his partner, Deborah Dale of York, ME, Edmond L. O'Keefe Jr. and his wife, Linda of Hudson, NH, and George O'Keefe of Boston; a step-daughter, Kathleen Downs and her husband, Kenneth of Toledo, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was the step-mother of the late Edward Anthony Sousa, and sister of the late James P. H. Roane Jr.

It being her wishes, there are no calling hours. Her Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at St. Margaret Church, Stevens St., Lowell, at 10:30 AM. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment with a ceremony of Military Funeral Honors, performed by the Walker-Rogers Post 662 Veterans of Foreign War Honor Guard, in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell.
