Dorothy Louise Matthews of Pelham, active in the community; 84 PELHAM Dorothy Louise (Gardner) Matthews, 84, of Pelham, died Friday morning, March 13, 2009, at Lowell General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Samuel J. Matthews who died June 30, 1998. Born in Lowell, January 2, 1925, the daughter of the late Willis C. and the late Mary (Dolan) Matthews, she attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School. Before retiring, Mrs. Matthews was a cashier for Purity Supreme in both the Salem and Pelham stores for over 30 years. She was a lifetime communicant of St. Patrick Church in Pelham. Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Pelham American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 100 for 24 years where she was also Chaplain and Honorable Life Member. She was a member of the Pelham Senior Citizens Center and the Red Hatter's Club. Whenever she could, she volunteered her time at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Manchester and the Pelham Food Pantry. She also worked the polls at every election in Pelham. Mrs. Matthews is survived by a daughter, Jo-Ann Matthews and her close friend, Tom Abbott of Hudson, NH; a son, Paul B. Matthews of Pelham; a sister, Anne (Gardner) (Russell) Pike of Nashua; and a brother, Lawrence Gardner of NC; also many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Mary E. Sanford, the late William Paul Gardner and the late Paul Brenden Gardner, both of whom died during WWII, and her twin brothers the late Francis Gardner and the late James Gardner. Her funeral will take place from the funeral home Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock followed by a Funeral Mass at ST. PATRICK CHURCH in Pelham at 10 o'clock. Burial in the Gibson Cemetery.
