NASHUA, NH -- Eugene W. Schueller, age 86, formerly of Chelmsford, passed away on January 28, 2011, at the Southern NH Medical Center, with family at his side.
He was the husband of the late Gladys I. (Rock) Schueller, who preceded him in death in 1982.
Eugene was born on November 24, 1924 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a son of the late J. Albert and Esther Mary (O'Neill) Schueller.
Eugene was a descendant of Prussian immigrants John Matthew Schueller and Rebecca Kress, co-founders of the town of Howard, SD where he was raised. As a teenager, he won a state singing contest with his aria, "Amarilla".
He was a World War II combat veteran. He enlisted at the age of 19 in the U.S. Army, where he was assigned to an Anti-Aircraft squadron and fought at the battle of Remagen Bridge and the push into Germany. As part of the occupation forces at the end of the war, he was given command of a squadron tasked with guarding German SS officers from the Dachau Concentration Camp. Following his military service, he graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
He worked for Northern Ordinance in Minneapolis, General Electric in Syracuse, also contracting for NASA in Florida and later retired from Mitre Corporation in Bedford in 1985.
He was an avid golfer and was proud to claim two holes in one in his career and 'shot his age' several times. He enjoyed playing cribbage and bridge. Eugene was very active in Rivier College's Rivier Institute for Senior Education (RISE) Program, where he taught classes and wrote poems and prose for their Dawn Publication. He had a special love for his family's pets and relished each visit with them.
Eugene is survived by his children, Patricia A. Lafleur and her husband, Robert T. Lafleur of Hudson, NH, Richard L. Schueller and his wife, Susan (Chaisson) of Chelmsford; two grandsons, Benjamin A. Lafleur of Methuen and Daniel E. Lafleur of Nashua, and his longtime companion and friend, Mary Moore, of Nashua. He also leaves several nieces and nephews and their families in California and Georgia.
He was the brother of the late John J. Schueller of Garden Grove, CA.
