TYNGSBORO -- Niall Dennis Murphy, 31, of Tyngsboro, formerly of Lowell, died Wednesday February 16, 2011 at his home.
Born in Lowell, MA on November 1, 1979, he was the son of Edmund Dennis Murphy of Tyngsboro and the late Norma Lee (Murphy) Murphy who died in April 2001.
Niall was raised in Lowell and graduated from Central Catholic High School with the Class of 1999. As quarterback and team captain, he helped lead the Central Catholic Football team to two Super Bowl Championships in 1997 and 1998. In outdoor track, he served as captain in his senior year. He broke the CCHS records in both the 110 and the 300 hurdles and earned state titles in both categories. He was elected to the Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame in Lawrence, MA in 2008. Niall graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA with the Class of 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. While at Harvard, he was an All-Ivy Strong Safety for the Crimson football team as well as a member of the undefeated 2001 Ivy League Championship team. He also was on the track team and as a senior helped the Crimson capture the Naughton Trophy in the Harvard-Yale v. Oxford-Cambridge Meet in Cambridge, England.
Niall worked as the Director of Recruiting for MetLife in Connecticut and MetLife Financial Group of Massachusetts since 2003. He was an active member of both the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and GAMA International. He was involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Friends of Harvard Football and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Lowell.
Besides his father, he is survived by a sister and her husband, Lauren Murphy and Brian Akashian of Lowell; paternal grandparents, Edmund and Justine (Powers) Murphy of N. Tewksbury, MA; a niece, Madeline Murphy Akashian; a nephew and godson, Ned Murphy Akashian; his girlfriend, Krista Bushong of Beverly, MA; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
