Alice Foye Obituary

Alice E. Foye
former Lowell schoolteacher; 92

At age 92, Alice E. Foye, beloved aunt of the Foye Clan, peacefully passed away with family and friends surrounding her. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on August 3, 1918, Alice is preceded in death by her father, Paul L. Foye, her mother, Helen M. (Mc Evoy) Foye, and her two brothers, Capt. Paul F. Foye, and William L. Foye. She is survived by 13 nieces and nephews, and 27 grandnieces and grandnephews.

Alice graduated from Lowell High School in 1936, and went on to graduate from Lowell State in 1940, and received her Masters Degree from Fitchburg State in 1952. Alice always appreciated that her parents insisted that she graduate from college like her brothers.

Alice was a professional independent woman, who enjoyed the respect and love of her family and colleagues. A dedicated educator, like her brothers, Paul (Dean of Academics, US Coast Guard Academy) and Bill (Principal, New London High School), Alice was employed as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist for over 40 years, She began her career in the Lowell school system, and finished the majority of her career in Watertown.

For much of her life, Alice was also the primary caregiver and support for her father, stricken by a stroke early in his life, and for her mother in her later years. Alice enjoyed her extended family including the Gilligan, Costello and Sexton cousins. In 1998, after living in Massachusetts for most of her life, Alice made New London, Connecticut her home.

Alice was an enthusiastic traveler, enjoying trips to Europe and Canada with family and friends. But Alice's true passion was following sports of all kinds. Her interest in sports began during her childhood while watching her Lowell uncles play baseball, one of whom was signed by the Red Sox organization. In fact, the families' contribution to the community through sports is memorialized at the The Foye Family Gymnasium in the Centralville area of Lowell.

Alice attended many Coast Guard Academy games and events where her brother coached. She also would watch countless sporting events as her nieces and nephews participated at the high school and college levels. The Boston Red Sox, however, rose above all other teams for her loyalty with the Celtics and Patriots not far behind. Alice could be found contently watching the BoSox games for the duration, and remained a wealth of statistical knowledge about the team throughout her life.

Alice lived a full life and took great comfort in her family and her Roman Catholic faith. Her passing marks the end to her immediate family lineage but her spirit still lives in the next generation.

The family would like to give special thanks to Pearl Gare, her devoted caregiver for the last year.

Thank you Alice for being the person you were. I will always remember having you for a favorite baby sitter at Cobbets Pond so long ago and walking down Turtle Rock Road every day to see the sheep. You and Paul and Billie were always the examples to follow for your younger cousins.

To all the Foyes,
Please accept my condolences on the passing of your aunt. She was a very special woman. Aunt Alice will always be in my memories of growing up with all of you. I couldn't believe she knew who I was when I saw her last year. You were blessed to have her in your lives for so long. I may not be able to get there tomorrow for the services but please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time. Fondly, Carol Flanagan-Dupuis

My sincere condolences to the Foye family - a fellow New Englander and a fellow avid Boston Red Sox fan myself, I share many of Alice's passions. Knowing Alice's niece (Ruth) extremely well, I can only imagine the loss you all feel....
