CHELMSFORD -- Daniel R. Gillette, of Chelmsford, MA and Bonita Springs, FL, a well respected Chelmsford business leader and realtor, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at the age of 78.

Dan was the beloved husband of Carole (Sargent) Gillette with whom he would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on April 28th.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, March 10, 1934, the son of the late Sullivan and the late Rose J. (Burns) Gillette, Dan attended Lowell schools and was a 1951 graduate of Lowell HS, where he served as class president and editor of the "Spindle". He went on to graduate from Emerson College with a degree in Broadcasting.

Dan was a popular local radio personality in the 50's and 60's on WCAP radio in Lowell where he hosted one of the earliest call-in radio talk shows. He interviewed many popular musicians and actors of the day including Bette Davis and Jack Kerouac.

He entered the U.S Army and served as a Communication Specialist with the 101st Airborne Division during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Dan was a well-known realtor in the Chelmsford area and ultimately retired from his company, Johnson/Gillette Real Estate in 1994. During his career, he served as President of the Greater Lowell Board of Realtors.

Active in the town of Chelmsford, he was a founding member and served as president of both the Chelmsford Business Association and the Chelmsford Rotary Club. He was also recognized by Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow. In his earlier years, he enjoyed acting and performed in many productions with the Chelmsford Players.

From 1983 to 2004 Dan served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank, and also as a member of the Strategic Investments and Audit Committees for the bank.

A trustee Emeritus of Lowell General Hospital, Dan served many years on the Hospital board.

An avid golfer, Dan was a member of Vesper Country Club for over 40 years. He served on the Executive Committee for many years and as club Secretary. He was also the long-time and beloved Commissioner of the Men's Tuesday Twi-League, a position which brought Dan and the membership great joy.

A past President of The Old Scouts, he was a member of D'Youville Manor Men's Guild and was a generous supporter of the Chelmsford Public Library.

Dan was a faithful Red Sox and Boston College football fan. A member of the BC Gridiron Club and BC season ticket holder for many years, he graciously entertained many family, friends and even some strangers at BC tailgate parties throughout the years.

He was the devoted father of Donna Thoene and her husband, Glenn of Chelmsford, Daniel Gillette, Jr. and his wife, Susan of Chelmsford, David Gillette and his wife, Tanya of New Port Richie, FL, and Jennifer Paletta and her husband, Todd of Chelmsford. He was also a proud and very loving grandfather who cherished his grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Douglas Thoene, Robert and Jessica Paletta, Allison and Daniel Gillette, his step grandchildren, Kayla Nolet, Ashley Leiper and Kevin Cole; several dear in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.

GILLETTE -- In Chelmsford, April 4, 2012, at home, Daniel R. Gillette, 78, retired Chelmsford realtor, beloved husband of Carole (Sargent) Gillette.

Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET at Fletcher for a Memorial Visitation from 3 to 7 P.M. Saturday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Funeral Mass to be celebrated Monday morning at ST. MARGARET CHURCH in Lowell at 9:30 A.M.
