A member of a well known Lowell family,
LOWELL -- William F. Merritt, 82, a native son and proud resident of the City he loved, died Thursday evening, September 13, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
In an incredible year for his or any other family, while battling his own medical issues, he experienced the passing of his beloved wife of 52 years, Ethel P. (Powers) Merritt who died October 10th, 2011, and their daughter, Patrice Merritt -- McInnis who died February 13th of this year. Throughout the past 11 months, with the help of his children and the support of his family and friends, Bill displayed an inner strength and strong faith that was an inspiration to one and all.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, November 12, 1929, a son of the late William A. and Theresa V. (Brick) Merritt, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Keith Academy in Lowell in the Class of 1947. He then went on to attend Merrimack College.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Bill served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Valley Forge and was awarded the Navy "E" insignia.
Before retiring, Bill was employed as a Line-Assigner with New England Telephone for over 30 years. Most recently, he worked at St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury for over 20 years.
A longtime communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Lowell, he was active with many charitable causes including the Challenge Unlimited Program at Ironstone Farm in Andover for many years, a program which supports children and adults with disabilities using horses. He was recently the recipient of the Joann Weber Spirit of Giving Award for 2012. He was also an avid and dedicated supporter of the Celebration of Life and Father Gregory. Along with a group of friends, Bill spent the last 30 years supporting this cause which improved the lives of abandoned and disabled children throughout the world. In addition, Bill who was a friend's friend, was an active member of the Keith Academy Alumni Association and a longtime member of the Mt. Pleasant Golf Club in Lowell.
Bill is survived by a daughter, Pamela Nusbaum and her husband, Theodore of Londonderry, NH; a son, John G. Merritt of Derry, NH; five grandchildren, Meaghan McInnis of Richmond, VA, Garin McInnis of Lowell, MA, and Abigail, Rebeccah and Samuel Nusbaum all of Londonderry, NH; two sisters, Barbara V. Torpey and Margaret M. Loucraft, both of Lowell, MA; a brother George W. Merritt and his wife, Martha of Kennebunk, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides being predeceased by his wife and daughter, Bill was also father of the late William A. Merritt who died July 1, 1978.

10 o'clock followed by a Funeral Mass at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH (Lower church) at 11 o'clock. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury.
