PELHAM -- John Steck, 98, of Pelham died Sunday October 7 with his family by his side.
He was born May 9, 1914 and was actively working on his dairy farm and running his sawmill until his death.
The son of the late Paul P. and the late Bronislawa (Januszewski) Steckiewicz, John was a sergeant in the Army during WWII and served with the National Guard Battery "B", 237th, AAA in Australia and New Guinea. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Farm Bureau. John learned to fly in the 1930's and loved flying his airplanes from the field on his farm in Pelham. He was a generous man with his time and talents and helped many people over the years with his ability to fix any machine or treat their sick animals. John was interested in everything and liked to sit in his very warm workshop on cold winter days and trade stories with his friends.
Mr. Steck is survived by LaVerne, his wife of 64 years, son Paul Steck, daughter Linda Steck Reed, son David Steck and his wife Audrey; granddaughters Heather Steck-Yeaton and her husband Shane Yeaton, and Jennifer Steck-Lubao; great-grandchildren Tara Steck-Yeaton, Grace Steck-Yeaton, Elise Steck-Yeaton, and Gabriel John Steck-Lubao; niece Cynthia Brettell and nephew Charles Brettell.
John is predeceased by his sisters Frances Steckiewicz, Irene Steckiewicz, R.N., Nellie Steckiewicz and Evelyn (Steckiewicz) Brettell, twin brother Charles Steck and sister-in-law Barbara (Dunlay) Steck, son-in-law Frank Reed, great-grandchildren Justin Tornow and Hope Steck-Yeaton.
At his request, services will be private.
