LOWELL -- Mary Rita (Prescott) Leary, R.N., 98, of Lowell, a member of a well known Greater Lowell family, died Tuesday morning at Lowell General Hospital/Saints Medical Campus.
She was the wife of the late William F. Leary, Sr. who died November 23, 1985.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, September 16, 1914, the daughter of the late William M. and the late Mary E. (Mullen) Prescott, she attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1932.
Mrs. Leary went on to graduate from Tewksbury Hospital School of Nursing in 1935.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as a Registered Nurse with the Chelsea Soldier's Home for several years.
A lifelong communicant of St. Margaret's Church and a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality of her parish, Mrs. Leary was also a member of the League of Catholic Women.
Mrs. Leary enjoyed spending time with her family and friends in East Alton, New Hampshire where she summered for many years with her late husband, her children, grandchildren and most recently her great- grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter Sheilagh A. Banacos of Dracut; a son William F. Leary, Jr. and his wife Helen (Daly) Leary of Chelmsford; a granddaughter Courtney A. (Leary) Cooper and her husband Richard of Lowell; a grandson James P. Leary of Sarasota, FL; two great- grandchildren Abigail Cooper and Jack Cooper both of Lowell; two sisters Dorothy Cleary of Vero Beach, FL and Martha Hickey of Chelmsford; a brother James B. Prescott of Lowell; a sister-in-law Rose Marie (Campbell) Prescott of Nashua, NH and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Leary was also the sister of the late William Prescott and the late John Prescott and was sister-in- law of the late Jack Hickey and the late Edward Cleary.
