Gilbert A. "Gilly" Price
Retired Lowell Teacher
World War II Navy Veteran

LOWELL -- Gilbert A. "Gilly" Price, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died February 3, 2013, at home, after a brief illness, with his loving family at his side, aged 85 years. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan (Slater) Price with whom he was married for 59 years.

Born in Lowell, July 13, 1927, he was a son of the late Harold and Harriet (Morse) Price. He received his early education in the Lowell school system, and graduated from Lowell High School, a member of the National Honor Society, with the Class of 1945. He went on to further his education at Fitchburg State College, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education, magna cum laude, and Master's Degree in Education.

Mr. Price served in the U.S. Navy during WW II as a Seaman, Second Class. He received the World War II Victory medal, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Upon his return from service, he worked as a finished carpenter for a time. He became employed as a teacher by the Lowell School Department in 1955, where he taught Industrial Arts and Drafting for 36 years, retiring in 1991.

Gilbert and Joan were married on September 23, 1950. Together, they lovingly built a home in the Highlands neighborhood of Lowell, where they settled to raise their family.

For over 30 years, Gil and Joan were avid square dancers and members of the Red Hot Squares Club of Burlington, MA, where they made many great friends. He enjoyed traveling and camping, and took his family to visit many places throughout the U.S. and Canada. He also enjoyed spending time at the family beach cottage in Scituate. Mr. Price was an avid gardener, and was known for growing many varieties of vegetables. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchild.

He was a member of the Highland Congregational Church, and more recently, the Christ Church United of Lowell.

Affectionately known as "Mr. Fix-It", he was extremely handy, and always willing to help family, friends and neighbors with household projects. He was also a famed member of the "Hammer and Saw Boys".

He is survived by a daughter, Karen E. Partridge, and a son, Richard A. Price, both of Lowell. Three grandchildren, Rebecca L. Champoux, Matthew R. Partridge, and Sean E. Partridge, all of Claremont, NH. A sister-in-law, Muriel Slater of Chelmsford, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves dear friends, Fred and Kay Haley of Lowell.
