CHELMSFORD -- Virginia Turner Mayo, 91, died on Monday, March 25, 2013 at Town & Country Nursing Home in Lowell. Virginia was born November 3, 1921 in Billerica, Massachusetts the fourth child of Frederick H. and Maude E. Mayo. She was educated in Billerica schools and graduated with a teaching degree from Bridgewater State Teacher's College. She taught for many years in Mendon and Billerica Elementary Schools, retiring from Billerica Elementary School. She had resided in Chelmsford for many years.
She was a 7th degree lifetime Grange member for over 65 years, attending Pinehurst of Billerica Grange #398, Dunstable Grange #31 and the Chelmsford Grange serving in many capacities including Master and Lecturer. Virginia enjoyed doing handcrafts, trivia, and being outdoors. She stayed in shape by taking daily long walks around Chelmsford until she was confined to Town & Country Nursing Home. She never drove anywhere that she could just as easily walk to.
Virginia enjoyed traveling during school vacations and in her retirement and visited every state in the United States and every continent except Antarctica.
She was predeceased by her parents and her three sisters, Susan Mayo, Josephine Mayo, and Priscilla Mayo Lachut.
She is survived by four nephews and their families; Alden Brown, Leonard Brown, Sherman Brown, and Dexter Brown all of New Hampshire. She is also survived by many cousins in Maine.
