CHELMSFORD -- Walter H. Small Jr., 87, a resident of Chelmsford since 1960, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013. He was the husband of the late M. Phyllis (McRell) Small.
He was born in Lowell on March 24, 1926, a son of the late Walter H. and Flora (Bernier) Small Sr. He received his education in Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School. He was also a graduate of Peterson School of Steam Engineering in Boston.
Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
Prior to his retirement in 1995, he was employed for 33 years as a Steam Engineer at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
During the winter months Walter enjoyed smoking a cigar while shoveling snow.
He was a member of the National Association of Power Engineers, Chapter 17, in Lowell.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Leslie Small of Chelmsford; his longtime companion, Elaine Mayrand of Lowell; a brother, Allan Small of Lowell; a sister; Eileen Finch of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Eugene Small, Thomas Small, Shirley Malone, and Muriel Correa.
SMALL -- WALTER H., JR. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 8pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD. His Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10 o'clock at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
