James G. Marshall
historic Tewksbury family member; 80
TEWKSBURY -- James Gilbert "Jimmy" Marshall, age 80, the last survivor of the male Marshall name bloodline, died Sunday night, May 19, at the de Rham Hospice House in Cambridge.
He was born in Lowell, January 5, 1933, the only son of the late James Chandler Marshall, and Ella May (McLoon) Marshall, and lived his entire life in Tewksbury. His family residence, built in 1728, is recognized as the town's oldest residence, and the family bloodline dates back the town's first settlors, predating the incorporation of Tewksbury in 1734. Jimmy was proud of his family heritage, but always remained modest about the subject.
He graduated from the Lowell Trade School, which prepared him for his career as a heavy equipment mechanic and operator. In 1978 he retired from the Tewksbury Department of Public Works as the D.P.W. Mechanic.
Jimmy served in the U.S. Army in the peacetime period following the Korean War.
He was a member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington B.P.O. Elks, Lodge 2070 in Tewksbury, and the Bunting Club in So. Lowell.
Jimmy will be remembered for his quiet manor, his seriously dry humor, and little grin that would appear when he was trying to "pull the wool over your eyes!"
He is survived by two sisters, Ruth Dziadul of East Cambridge, who had cared for him in her home over the last year, and Marjorie Houle of Richmond, VA; a niece, Michelle Houle of San Diego, CA; two nephews, James Marshall Houle and his wife Lenny, and David Laurent Houle all of Richmond, VA.
