Robert A. Destrempe
Retired Captain of
the Lowell Fire Department
DRACUT - Robert Arthur Destrempe, 83, of Dracut, formerly of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20th, 2013 at the Northwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lowell.
For 58 years, he was the beloved husband of the late Jacqueline V. (Vigeant) Destrempe who passed away on May 2.
He was born in Lowell on July 16, 1929, a son of the late Romeo and Alida (Piche) Destrempe.
Bob was educated in Lowell Public Schools, and was appointed as a Lowell Firefighter in 1962 and retired at the rank of Captain in 1991.
He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged.
He was a member of the former Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish in Lowell and held membership in the Lowell Retired Firefighter's Association. He was also a retired member of Local 853 International Association of Firefighters, Dracut American Legion, the VFW and The Franco-American Club.
Bob was a big New England sports fan who regularly attended Lowell Spinners games. He loved his daily walks along the Merrimack River where he would meet and chat with his many friends. He also enjoyed the beach, travel, dancing, his grandchildren, and most of all, spending time with his wife, Jackie.
He is survived by his four sons, Richard and his wife, Diane Destrempe of Bedford, NH, Norman Destrempe of Concord, MA, Raymond and his wife Debra Destrempe of Lowell, and Robert and his wife Gina Destrempe of Chelmsford; He was a loving "Pépère" to his seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Destrempe of Lowell, Scott Destrempe of Dracut, Anna (Destrempe) Laliberte of Hermosa Beach, CA, Kara Destrempe of San Francisco, CA, Alida Destrempe of Columbus, Ohio, Andrew and Philip Destrempe of Chelmsford, and his Great Grandchild Jordan Destrempe of Dracut.
Robert was predeceased by his sisters Irene (Gagnon) Coutu, Blanche Chartrand and his brother's, Arthur and Edmond Destrempe.
The Destrempe family would like to thank the staff of the Northwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the exceptional care he received during his time with them.
DESTREMPE - Relatives and friends may call at the M. R. LAURIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St. Lowell on Tuesday, June 25 from 5 until 7 pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at Ste. Marguerite D'Youville Church, Dracut. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 139 Main St., Cambridge, MA, 02142.
