Laurence F. McMahon Recipient of the DFC; Former Vice President of Haartz Auto Fabric Co., in Acton -- WESTFORD -- Laurence F. McMahon, 92, a longtime resident of Westford, died on June 26, 2013. -- He was born in Lowell on May 30, 1921 and was a son of the late Joseph J. and Blanche L. (Riley) McMahon. -- Laurence graduated from Lowell High School and the Lowell Technological Institute with a BS in Chemistry and a Masters Degree in Plastics. He was recognized by the University of Lowell with a Golden Lifetime Achievement Award. -- He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II and was a member of the 467 Bomber Group in the Eighth Air Force stationed at Rackheath Airbase in England. He flew 35 combat missions as a tail gunner of a B24 Liberator and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with four battle stars for courage and devotion to duty. He also received the Certificate of Valor and the Good Conduct medal. After the war, he returned to Lowell where he continued his education at the Lowell Technological Institute. On October 29th, 1950, he married Elizabeth Delaney, RN whom he had met at a college dance. Laurence was an active member of St. Catherine of Alexandria parish in Westford. He worked for 37 years at Haartz Auto Fabric Company in Acton, MA where he was director of the laboratory for many years. He concluded his career as Vice President of the company. Laurence's many interests included skiing, dancing, singing, and spending time with his loving family. He was a dearly beloved husband for 63 years of Elizabeth L. (Delaney) McMahon; and a devoted father of Karen Durkin and her husband, Michael of Nashua, NH, Diane Brown and her husband, William of Chelmsford, MA, and Dr. Laurence F. McMahon, Jr. and his wife, Jane of Ann Arbor, MI. He was also the most loving grandfather of William and Ryan Brown, Meghan Durkin and Laurence III, Patrick, and Colin McMahon. Mr. McMahon was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Stillman, and by his sisters, Blanche and Iris. McMAHON -- LAURENCE F. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 o'clock at St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish, 107 North Main St., Westford, MA. Interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford, MA.
