Amar Khelifi; 57 UMass Lowell Doctorate Alumni -- LOWELL -- Mr. Amar Khelifi, age 57, of Lowell, died on Tuesday, July 9th, 2013, at Lowell General Hospital, following a battle with cancer. For 22 years, he was the beloved husband of Kimberly A. Curran. He was born in Bouira, Algeria, on March 13, 1956, son of the late Amar & Hamama Khelifi. After emigrating to the United States, he attended and graduated from UMass Lowell and received his Master's Degree and then his Doctorate (Ph.D) in Plastics Engineering; also having worked in that field and was an educator for many years. Amar had a passion for cooking, and was also an avid sports fan of the Boston and New England Teams. He also enjoyed the Lowell Spinners and attended games with his wife, Kim. He was also a member of the Pawtucketville Social Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Paulina Curran of Lowell; sisters-in-laws, Tracy Smith and her husband, Robert, Michelle Curran and Irene Curran; one brother-in-law, John Curran and his wife, Karen of Lowell; three sisters, Yamina, Aouda and Houira, all of Algeria; also many nieces, nephews and close friends, here and abroad. The Family would like to extend a special thanks to all the nurses at the PCU Unit at Lowell General, the staff at the LGH Cancer Center, and the Lowell VNA for their compassion and their care. KHELIFI -- Relatives & Friends will be received at the M.R. LAURIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St., Lowell, MA on Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 2:00 until 5:00 PM. Interment will take place at a later date in his native Algeria.
