WW II Vet, 91

LOWELL -- John G. "Jack" Flood, 91, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 25th at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband for 25 years of Sharron Newell, who survives him.

He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, February 18, 1922, one of five children of the late Patrick and the late Sabina (Cromey) Flood. He attended St. Patrick Grammar School and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1942. Several months after the start of WW II, at the age of 17, Jack enlisted in the U.S Army.

Assigned, as a lone scout, to the 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion, Jack saw combat in North Africa, landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day, fought in Rötgen/Hürtgen Forest region (the Forgotten Battle) in October of 1944, and was deployed in the early days of the Battle of the Bulge to stop the German advance. Jack was the recipient of a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, Three Purple Hearts, and the Croix de Guerre, from both Belgium and France.

Before retiring, Jack was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a Mail Carrier for over 32 years.

Devoted to his church, Jack was a lifelong parishioner of St. Patrick Church in Lowell where he volunteered his time and services.

An active person his entire life, Jack enjoyed working around his home and gardens and taking trips to Ireland with his wife. He also shared a great love of horses and dogs.

In addition to his wife Sharron, Jack is survived by two sisters Helen A. Byrne of Lowell and Mary M. Vinton of Lowell; three nephews and a niece C. Emmett Byrne, Jr. and his wife Kathy, John P. Byrne and his wife Sharon, Michael J. Byrne all of Lowell and Sheila O'Hagan and her husband Thomas of Las Vegas, NV; as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Jack was also the brother of the late Thomas Flood, the late Henry Flood and was uncle of the late Thomas Flood and the late Thomas Byrne.

FLOOD -- In Merrimack, NH, August 25, 2013, at Community Hospice, John G. "Jack" Flood, 91, of Lowell, husband of Sharron Newell. Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 2 to 5 P.M. Thursday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass Friday morning at ST.
