of Lowell

LOWELL, MA -- D. H. Richards, 87, a longtime resident of Lowell, MA, died Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family, after a long illness.

He was married to Theresa (Barrows) Richards, who died March 8, 2013 after 63 years of marriage.

Born in Manchester, NH, he was a son of the late William and Edith (Hammar) Richards.

Doria proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps for twenty-four and one half years. During WW II, he fought in the battle of Iwo Jima with the 3rd Div. 21st Marines and was a member of the select expeditionary force that secured the island of Chi Chi Jima. During the Korean War, he served as a Drill Instructor at MCRD Parris Island, SC. After the war, Doria had tours of duty at Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan, Camp LeJeune, NC and as a NROTC Instructor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Doria returned to combat duty in 1967-1968 serving as a 1st Sergeant in I Corps, Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

After retiring from the Marine Corps, Doria worked for the IRS in Andover, MA, and the U.S. Postal Service in Lowell, retiring in 1987.

Doria was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion Post 87 of Lowell. He had been a volunteer coach and board member with the Lowell Highland Little League for 20 years. He was an avid reader, a walker, followed the local professional teams, and enjoyed gardening.

Doria and his wife wintered in Florida at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Lighthouse Point, and summered at Belleau Lake in East Wakefield, NH for many of the last 30 years.

He was a communicant of St. Margaret Church of Lowell, MA.

He is survived by two daughters, Doreen and her husband, Daniel Norton of Kingwood, TX, and Karen Richards of Gloucester, MA; three sons, Dennis Richards of Lowell, MA, Kevin Richards of Show Low, AZ, and Phillip Richards of Lowell, MA; two brothers, Reginald Richards of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and William Richards of Pepperell, MA; one sister, Edith (Richards) Kearin of Lowell, MA; five sisters in-law, Lillian Richards of Hudson, NH, Irene Christie of Lowell, MA, Margaret Flannery of Wellesley, MA, Effie Barrows of Methuen, MA, and Anastsia Silver of Boynton Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Scott and his wife, Beth Lynn Norton of Naperville, IL, Kathryn and her husband, Michael Cooper of Denver, CO, Meghan Norton of Kingwood, TX, David Richards and his wife, Jamie of Oceanside, CA, and Michael Elwell of Gloucester, MA; and four great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Edmund Richards, Ronald Richards, Alice Fielder, and Katherine Arpin.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lawrence Blaszkowsky, Ann Donnelly, NP, Stefanie Walsh, OCN of Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Merrimack Valley Hospice for their care and support.

Funeral Tuesday at 8:30 A.M. from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 MIDDLESEX ST., CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 A.M. at St. Margaret's Church in Lowell. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury, MA.
