U.S. Navy Korean War Veteran
CHELMSFORD -- George W. Stewart M.D., a longtime resident of Chelmsford, died peacefully on June 11, 2014, in Lowell, after a brief illness, aged 83 years.
Born in Lowell, May 29, 1931, the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Higgins) Stewart. He received his early education in the Lowell school system, and graduated from Lowell High School in 1948, where he was a Boy Officer and member of the Science Club. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at Tufts University, and went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine Degree at Harvard Medical School.
George enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving as a General Practitioner on merchant ships where he provided care for wounded soldiers. Lieutenant Stewart was honorably discharged on July 9, 1959.
Dr. Stewart opened his private practice on Merrimack Street in 1959, where he treated patients until 1986. During this time, he was affiliated with the former St. Joseph's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also the "house" doctor for AT&T for many years.
George was a longtime member of the Christ Church United of Lowell, and the Harvard Club of Boston.
In 1997, Dr. Stewart was invited to participate in the historic sailing of "Old Ironsides", which commemorated her Bicentennial, and marked the first time that the USS Constitution cruised under sail alone in over 116 years.
During retirement, he enjoyed trout fishing, stamp collecting and golf. He traveled extensively and loved to spend time at the ocean.
Doctor Stewart was a kind, talented man who held many interests and will always be remembered for his dedication to his patients, and deep love for his country and church family.
He is survived by his friends and church family at Christ Church United.

Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Blvd., the Highlands neighborhood of Lowell, on Monday from 9 to 11 AM, followed by his Funeral Service at 11 AM.
Interment with a ceremony of Military Funeral Honors, performed by the Walker Rogers Post 662 Veterans of Foreign War Honor Guard, in Lowell Cemetery.
