Kathleen Howe Obituary

Kathleen E. Howe
Longtime resident of Chelmsford; 67

CHELMSFORD -- Kathleen Edna (Chew) Howe, age 67, of Chelmsford, passed away surrounded by family on February 14, 2015 in Gainesville, Florida.

Kathleen was born in Providence, Rhode Island, one of two children of the late Ernest and Edna (Wolstencroft) Chew. Her brother, William Chew, preceded her in death.

Kathleen was a 1965 graduate of Chelmsford High School, and a 1969 Tufts University graduate, where she was one of the first few women to graduate with a civil engineering degree. She worked as a civil engineer and surveyor locally, owning her own business, Howe Surveying Associates. A proud resident of Chelmsford for more than 50 years, she actively served on many town committees and organizations. In recent years, she also enjoyed painting and reconnecting with high school friends. Kathi was known for her positive outlook, outgoing nature and constant smile.

Her greatest joy in life was her children and grandchildren. She leaves three children, Kristin Howe and husband, Paul Willeard of London, England, Alycia Howe and her husband, Michael Murray of Chelmsford, and David Howe and his wife, Clewis (Kinnett), also of Chelmsford and six grandchildren, Brynn, Nathaniel, Eoin, Elsa, William and Benjamin. She also leaves her beloved niece and nephew-in-law, Tamara and Joseph Gorski of Stonington, Connecticut and their children, Caitlin and Alec.

HOWE -- A memorial service celebrating Kathi's life will be held in late June. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kathleen Chew Howe Memorial Scholarship, set up to support CHS graduates pursuing studies in engineering. Donations can be made through the CHSAA website (chsalumni.org) or by sending a donation to: Chelmsford High School Alumni Association, 200 Richardson Rd., Chelmsford, MA 01863 with checks made out to "CHSAA Endowment Fund" with a notation of "Kathleen Chew Howe Scholarship".

Kathy was one of the girls who played ball with the boys in the neighborhood with Sue and I. I will always remember the fun we had. She will be missed at the CHS reunion meeting as she was our leader. I hope everyone shows up for it because she truly worked hard on it. Good bye Kathy. Love Nancy Lajoie Whiting

Howe Family... I never met your mom but heard many good things about her from Kristin. My mom passed away on Feb 8 and her life, it turns out, had some parallels to your mom's. She went to Tufts ('47) and majored in chemistry because her h.s. guidance counselor said "girls" should not major in science. Like your mom she served on many town committees. Undoubtedly your mom was a role model for many in Chelmsford and her impact will live on. May she rest in peace. Peter Cassidy ASL
