He served nine years in the Army National Guard, with special points of pride including prequalifying for the Olympics as a marksman and driving the Governor in the first vehicle across the Mackinac Bridge upon its grand opening. An avid sports enthusiast, he was a former little league coach and bowler, and had a special passion in later years for all things related to car racing. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and music, and also had special skills in small engine repair, keeping countless cars and lawn mowers running smoothly all around town. Don appreciated humor and simplicity in life, and valued family, friends and neighbors, and helping others above all else. He is already sorely missed but his family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved Mary.
